how much maths is involved?
How much maths is actually involved in the course and how much of those "society" questions are there?

I (and others) like to dub Physics, mathematics + word problems.

Re: how much maths is involved?
yeah but what about the "society" questions, or random questions of the sort (e.g. the one in our half yearly where we had to design our own experiment (the soil types) )d3st1nyliang wrote:How much maths is actually involved in the course and how much of those "society" questions are there?

Well, if you'll notice, then that actually ISN"T a maths related question. And those questions were silly. Physics might involve real life scenarios.
And you'd ASSUME there would be a decent amount of maths involved. Not that I'm to tell you a definite answer, but you'd THINK there would be a maths involved. I mean, we only learnt a little part of physics that involved acceleration, speed, etc. and THAT used a lot of maths.

Apparently they changed the course to reduce the amount of maths in it or something a couple of years back.
Someone want to confirm?

would an alrite near to below average student be abe to do physics
if physics involved that much maths, could a person not at all confident with their current ability do physics

Current ability with what? Physics or Maths?
If it's the former, it would be smart not to take it.
If the latter, decide whether you're willing to work hard or not.

Re: how much maths is involved?
I'd expect physics to be a lot of maths. Zero maths? Definitely not.

A fair bit I'd say, but more focus on other branches to your conventional maths class. There's focus on log and stuff, which is only discussed to a lesser extent in normal maths.

post 2001, in the new hsc, maths applications have reduced.....and more concepts and society type learning has been added

Guys, understand that although it has maths, it's not maths. Sure, you've got numbers and etc, but it's completely different. I.e. questions and stuff.

It is. How do I know? I've had a read of the year 11 textbook and like it just seems to be like every other main science subject. Only with some equations and numbers thrown in :S

Yeah, I agree with Thai, I've looked through the year 11 textbook as well, it's not quite maths, but it's special in it's own little way. =D

Most of the time you're applying your knowledge in a similar way to maths. So if you're good at maths, there's a pretty good chance you'll be good at physics.

That's awful. Motion is the only part I'll powerhouse (I thought physics had a lot more to do with motion tbh). Lame.
EDIT: 1337th post. Win.

^ 1337th post. Good work Thai.
Yeah I'm planning to own the motion part of it too, our little area was pretty good at it in science aye Thai?

The textbook I'm looking at was published in 1990. It does have a hell of a lot of maths though. I suspect the new syllabus has reduced the skills component of the course considerably.

Maybe you guys. I got the right answer (after arguing with the teacher for a bit)
