Are there 'ranked' maths classes in year 11?
Just wondering. Also, is it true we have to be "picked" for extension 2?

mhmmm You have to be in the top 70 or somewhere around there in yr 11 to be eligible to do ext 2 maths =)tranquil1ty wrote:Just wondering. Also, is it true we have to be "picked" for extension 2?
And in yr 11, you also get ranked. I believe you get placed into classes depending on whether you're doing 12 or 13 units, and then ranked from there.

Wow, that puts a bucket load of pressure on me. I'm gonna struggle to meet that top70. Darn!
I'm already doing awful this year in maths.

The only reason we have to be picked is because the school apparently had a bunch of issues with parents pushing their unwilling kids into extension 2 classes when they couldn't cope. It looks better for the school to have a massively high mean in extension 2, and it also deals with the issue of all these random parents.

Yeah, I was being sarcastic there. If I don't get into extension 2 maths (I.e. I'm suckier than 72) I would suicide seriously.

I was looking at some of the year 11 half yearly results of the advanced and extension 1 maths classes that were posted at the back of my classroom and was totally confused when i saw such a huge range in the rank. A certain person (A. So) who ranked 1. was in the same class as ....... who was ranked 169. This leads me to ask how exactly are advanced and extension 1 classes made and who are the teachers that teach it?

Same... I remember something about different classes depending on whether you take 12 or 13 units. Let's hope I'm rank 1 next year

Its not my class, so I can't comment on the individuals (probably would be inappropriate to anyway), however a list of data does not tell the whole story.
Perhaps rank 169 had a bad day, was sick, something happened at home, all sorts of things. That is why we have more than one task in a year, everyone can have a bad day/test result from time to time.
Perhaps it was a test where all the marks were bunched together, e.g.
5 people get 100%
6 people get 99%
10 people get 98%
Now you score 97%, your rank is 22. If I just said a person's rank is 22 would you associate that with a result of 97%?
Back to your question;
First students are divided into those doing 13 units (offline) and those doing 12 units (on line), then the classes are graded within each of these groups.
Who teaches, it changes from year to year, but when you consider that we usually have eight Ext classes, then you see that most of the maths teachers will be teaching Ext.
