That doesn't make it compulsory. From the subject selection booklet: English is the ONLY compulsory subject in the senior school.

Re: Maths...compulsory? Oh noes!!!!
It's not technically "compulsory" but because of the lines and stuff, it pretty much becomes compulsory because not enough people drop it to count.

Let me clear this up, although I think you pretty much have it.
Maths is NOT compulsory.
The problem in the past has been that so few choose not to do it that it makes it impossible to put another subject up against it.
The question is not only how many do not want to do maths, but do they all have a subject in common that they want to do?

why wouldn't you do maths? =O

Re: Maths...compulsory? Oh noes!!!!
I was under the impression it was possible not to do maths if you took another class with open high school, but I could be wrong (at the very least, that was my plan for getting out of maths for Year 11 & 12)

I'm not doing maths and the reasons would be that i hate it and am fairly terrible at it which may stem from the fact that i hate it

I think if you want to drop it real bad they can't do anything but I bet they used some scare tactics in this years yr 11 to get no one to drop it :p

You can bet, but you would lose. No "scare" tactics were used.
Re: Maths...compulsory? Oh noes!!!!
But Mr Simmons, how could you know that none of the other teachers were secretly pushing all their students to do maths?

The only students we would push to do maths are those who we believed could do well.
Unfortunately we have a lot of students who do not realise how good they actally are at the subject. You see we only see things from our own perceptions, and because our group is so strong at maths, we sometimes perceive that we are rubbish at it.
If you could look at the bigger picture and see how good you are compared to the state, then your perception may well change.
I guess when the final results come out this year you may see that.
However if you really hate maths, then don't select it, it may upset your maths teacher but at the end of the day, nobody wants to see someone doing something they hate, if it can be avoided.
And no, this is not a cover up.

I personally believe that everyone in our grade could do extension maths if they bothered to put the extra effort in.

That's like saying that everyone could do well at any given subject at all if they bothered to put the extra effort in. The fact is, people don't want to because a) they'd rather be doing something else and b) they're under no obligation to.tranquil1ty wrote:I personally believe that everyone in our grade could do extension maths if they bothered to put the extra effort in.
And from what I surmised from the Year 11 Exam Timetable thing that gave an overview of the numbers of students doing each subject, there was one person not doing maths. Although that could be wishful thinking.
