I don't see the problem really.
You won't do well with an "incompetent" teacher because you'll not enjoy the lessons and people will rage about how much they hate the teacher when they should be studying to compensate for time wasted at school.
Let's face it, there are more types of teachers than just "easy going" and "tough". I don't want to name names as I'm sure you all know about the teachers that everyone whines about.
EDIT: I like all my teachers if any of you are reading this.

I stopped after I got 60% in the half yearly year 8 (when I actually tried in history). I was crushed when I got 9/20 for my essay to say the least.

Well, teachers will say "it depends on the student and how they deal with it". But seriously, in year 12, enjoying your classes will make life a lot easier for us.
